A Grace-ful Summer

Image
An old repost Luke was the best athlete in his school. Everyone knew it. No matter what sport he played, he excelled. Even the coaches on other teams would comment about how they knew he would go pro someday. Luke was all set to spend the summer at the most prestigious sports camp in the country, but then his grades came in. His mom told him that boys who barely pass any of their classes don't get rewarded with sports camp. Instead, she was shipping him off to his aunt's for the summer. Luke would spend his summer doing a different sort of athletics. Luke's aunt made it clear from the get-go that, since she had students living with her, she needed to keep her adolescent nephew out of trouble, so he would be intensively studying ballet with the students. At first, he thought that meant doing lifts and helping as an assistant, but his aunt banished those thoughts from his mind when she presented him with tutus, leotards, and panties. "For the summer, you are my niece, Gr...

Ballerina in the Elevator

Hudson was fed up with his project partner. No matter what, Madison seemed determined to make him miserable. Last Saturday, she had come over so early, he had still been in his Minecraft pajamas. “You can still work on our project.” She said. “They're cute! I think my little brother has the same ones.” He glared at her, but she smiled so sweetly, he almost thought he had imagined the barb. So this Saturday, he told her in no uncertain terms that they would be doing their project at her place. To his surprise, she agreed. “Yeah, your house was a little far for me. But, Saturday I'm at the Clarion Theater.” “What? Why?” “Helping some friends with their performance. I'll probably be done before you're there. I know you like to sleep in.” “What time?” “Oh, whenever you can make it that morning.” Girls were so annoying sometimes! She acted like he should just know what time works! He walked into the lobby and it took at least ten minutes before he found someone. Thankfully,...

Clara and His Nutcracker

“Wanna go another round?” Logan asked. “You're awesome as Ozai!” “Absolutely!” Jayce said, grinning. “I could play Capricorn all night long!” Logan got the game started, but Jayce could not focus on the loading screen of Lucia winking and blowing a bubble with her gum. Something was bothering him. Logan had always said friends could never, ever sleep over at his house and Jayce could not understand why. His parents seemed normal. They let them have pizza for dinner. Even Logan's little sister Kaylee wasn't that obnoxious as far as little sisters went. His little brother had to be at least ten times worse. “Shoot, this lobby's not active.” Logan leaned forward to reset and Jayce looked at the boy in his Capricorn onesie, a few dark blonde curls slipping out of the dark blue hood, his plump, pink lips tightened in focus… “I'm ready for my bedtime story!” Kaylee yelled through the closed door. Jayce watched as Logan's face paled. He turned to look at Jayce, wor...

Swan Lake (Sugar Plum Fairy II)

“Y'know,” Charlotte said. “Last winter was really nice, getting to watch whatever I wanted while you were across town, twirling and dancing.” “Very funny.” “And you were so graceful for like a week after!” “Charlotte, stop.” Jason muttered. “You know there's another ballet there right now.” Jason felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. “Charlotte…” “What? I was just gonna suggest we ask Mom and Dad if we can go.” Jason studied her face. Was it some plot of hers? Get them there and then do whatever it was she had done last time? “Eh, but I don't really know anything about this ballet.” Jason allowed himself to relax. “You had fun last time though, right?” “Sure.” He forced a smile. Charlotte nodded. Was she buying it? “What role did you play again?” “I was… the Sugar Plum Fairy.” Charlotte snorted. “That's right! Good thing you remember.” She softened somewhat. “I know it was a lot, but you did have fun, right?” “I said yes!” She grinned. “Oh, good...

How far would you go to get back a stolen phone? Brandon's heart pounded in his chest to the point where he almost thought he could see his shirt rising and falling. Why was he so nervous? He looked at the poster of the girl in tap shoes, dressed in some weird yellow outfit that was as feathery as it was sparkly. Because I don't belong here. He thought with a sigh. He had to go in there. Yesterday, McKenna had stolen his phone. He had to get it back before Mom and Dad found out he had 'lost’ another phone. I didn't lose it, he thought grumpily. McKenna took it! He had tracked her down only to learn she had given it to her friend Josie. Josie, he was told, took ballet here every Saturday morning. McKenna swore that she would definitely have it. So, here he was. He had even gotten up super early – almost as early as a school day – to sneak out of the house. The last thing he needed was for Mom or Dad to find out. “But I don't want to talk to some weird ballet girls.” ...

Ballet Is for Sissy Girls

To Caitlyn, a few hours of clothes shopping sounded like heaven, especially so today. It had all started at breakfast, when her older brother Jackson had been doing his usual routine of begging and pleading to get out of back to school shopping. “C’mon, mom, you know what size I am. Why do I need to come with?” Jackson whined. His mom sighed. “Because, Jackson, you’ll complain about everything I buy.” “But it’ll be boring!” “It’s only a couple hours.” “You know, mom, maybe he should just stay home.” Caitlyn said. Both her brother and her mom turned to stare at her. “Well, think about how much longer it’ll take with him whining and dragging his feet. I want to go to at least three different stores, so” she shrugged and trailed off, nibbling on her toast as she waited for her mom to see her side of things. “Hmm. I guess, as long as you stay out of trouble.” “I promise.” Jackson said at once, staring at his sister in disbelief. He brushed a bit of auburn hair out of his face. “Th...

Colton sighed as he stood in the front of Madame Prufond’s Studio of Dance. This was so dumb! He had only made fun of Caleb for doing ballet a few times, what was the harm? If anything, it was Caleb’s fault for crying and running to mom. Mom had decided that, as punishment, he would have to take ballet with Caleb for a full month. It had to be the most unfair punishment ever, in Colton’s mind. “May I help you?” A young woman in a black leotard said. “Yes, please.” Colton’s mom replied. “I want to sign my son up for ballet.” “Merveilleuse!” The young woman replied excitedly. “We only have the one mixed class, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.” “That’s the one. My other son Caleb already attends those, so I figured it’ll be easy.” “Absolutely.” The young woman replied, smiling kindly at Colton. “And is there any way we can sign him up just for a month?” The young woman frowned. “Let me check.” She said, disappearing into the back. Colton could see a few girls in frilly pink tutus pran...

Her Ballerina Son

"I hate football!" Jeremy exclaimed for what to be the hundredth time that week. HIs mom sighed. "I know, hon, but you made a commitment to the coach, to the team, and to your brother." "Jimmy knows how much I hate it. He says he doesn't mind if I quit." "You need some sort of extracurricular. I'm not going to have you moping around the house all the time." She knew that Jeremy was not as athletic as his younger brother. That was why the coaches had agreed to have him stay with the boys a year younger than him, including his brother, which probably caused him to hate the sport even more. "I've tried, but there aren't any good ones." "I'll see what I can find, but you agree to do whatever I pick?" Jeremy nodded, simply relieved that the end of football was in his sights. His mom tried for a week, but it was just like Jeremy had said: there really were not many other options. She did not like the idea of him...

The Newest Ballerina: Parade

Image
"Dalton! Get out of bed this minute!" Dalton jolted awake, sitting up and rubbing at his eyes. "Wha?" "Did you forget?" His dad asked incredulously. "Forget what?" That was met with a sigh. "You promised Emily you'd help with her parade float." "What? When?" "Don't you play dumb, mister. You're not getting out of this. If you promised her, you're doing it." "I didn't!" Why would he? Emily's ballet studio had a float in the town parade and why on earth, after everything that had happened, would Dalton want anything to do with that? "Uh-huh." "I swear!" "Why would your sister lie?" Because that's all she does. Dalton thought acerbically. He almost expected Emily to be peering at him with a smirk behind dad, but he could hear her laughing about something downstairs. Great. "Get dressed or I'll drag you downstairs." "I'm in my und...

The Newest Ballerina: Recital

Image
Still mad about the ballet class he had had to take, the last place on earth Dalton wanted to be was at Emily's ballet recital. He had tried to tell his parents he had homework to do, but they had insisted he support his sister. "No one does homework on Friday night anyway." His mom said. So Dalton now found himself standing in the lobby, waiting to go inside as his parents had what sounded like the single most boring conversation in history with other grown-ups. If only they had bought his lie about homework, he could be at home, watching a movie or playing a game. "Oh! Dalton, would you quick run this backstage?" His dad handed him a duffel bag he had been holding. "What is it?" "Emily insisted she needs it and I forgot I had it until just now." Dad said with a shrug. "Just go quick. We'll be sitting down soon." He forced the bag into Dalton's arms, signaling the conversation was over. "Thanks, bud." ~ D ~ Dalto...

Siblings

Cody stared at the plastic cup in front of him. He did not mind meeting the new neighbors, if only it weren't for two things. Firstly was the cup in front of him. Mrs. Dalton had said they were still unpacking their kitchenware, but he could not help but notice his mom and her got glasses while he got a faded pink Barbie cup that matched the cup sitting in front of Bethany, the second thing he did not like about this encounter. She leered across the table at him. Despite being five or maybe even six years younger than him, she seemed to tower over him enough to make him feel like a baby, even if she was really only about a head taller. "He's easily the shortest in his class." His mom had said as if unaware that that particular fact hurt him more than any other every time it was brought up. He sighed. At least the cookies were good. "Bethany, how about you and Cody go play in your room for a bit while me and Cody's mom chat?" "Oh, sure!" Bethan...
