Dax's Dare

Image
"There is no way he's gonna do it." Logan insisted. “No way.” "He's in there right now." Beau replied. "He's just wasting time." Logan kicked a pebble. “There's no way.” "He had it in a bag." Toby said. "I saw it." "Yeah, well..." Logan scoffed. "He's gonna chicken out." "I think he'll do it." Beau shrugged. "Fine. He'll come out, show us, and then run back inside." Logan said. "Guaran-freaking-teed." "That's a swear." Toby said with a gasp. "Is not." Logan rolled his eyes at Toby's naivete. "Is so." They went back and forth like this until Dax's voice coming from inside the bathroom interrupted them. "Beau. Got my board?" "I do." Beau dutifully responded, though doubt was starting to set in. "Are you almost ready?" The door creaked open and all three boys' jaws dropped. "Are my w...

The Two Alices

Image
“Face it, Levi. You lost.” “Don't need to rub it in.” He muttered, trying one last time to get the cards to stand up. It had been a dumb bet anyway, but Alice always knew just how to get under his skin. Sisters were like that, or at least Alice was. Jenn usually just sat there on her phone, observing the two of them at their never-ending game of one upping each other. “He's right, Alice.” Jenn said imperiously. Alice stuck her tongue out at Jenn. “One of these days, a bird's gonna come eat your tongue.” “That's not true.” “Ugh.” Levi pushed the cards away. “I give up.” “Well, you already lost.” Alice said. “So that means you gotta” her voice was taking on more and more of the sing-songy teasing tone. “Do what I say!” “Alice.” Jenn said. “You're not Mom.” Levi and Alice said in unison. “See, that's why people still think you're twins.” Jenn remarked, laughing as they both looked disgusted at the thought. “What's it gonna be?” Levi asked. Alice g...

The Three Bears

Not sure this is what they meant by "there are no small parts, only small actors" When Jamie became a world-famous actor, he knew he would never tell anyone that his first big role was as Little Bear in Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Maybe he could mention being in it as a sort of ‘from humble beginnings' thing, but the actual role would go unmentioned. It had taken a lot to convince everyone that Little Bear was just as good a name as Baby Bear and even then, he wasn't thrilled to be Little Bear. “I auditioned for Papa Bear.” “Yes.” Mrs. DeMarco the director agreed. “But that's part of acting. You don't always get the role you want.” She chuckled. “Can't have two Papa Bears with one Mama Bear, now can we?” “I thought you were… y'know, casting a kindergartener.” “I thought so too, but I think it'll be better with one of my older actors as Baby Bear.” At first, Jamie tried to make the most of it. After all, Little Bear and Papa Bear had a lot ...

Gabey New Year

“Go on. Ask him!” Jamie whined, tugging on his brother's hoodie sleeve. “We've still got time.” Kevin said with a chuckle. “Time for what?” “Granny said I gotta get ready soon.” Jamie mumbled into Kevin's sleeve. “Ask!” “Ask me what?” Gabe asked again. “Well,” Kevin smiled sheepishly. “Jamie wants to know if you'd be willing to be Baby New Year.” “What? No way.” Jamie detached himself from Kevin and looked up at Gabe with all the pleading energy a five year old could muster. “Please? Pretty please?” “I had to do it until you came along, Jamie.” Gabe said, which was mostly true. Kevin, being two years younger than him, had done it once, but had somehow managed to miss every New Year's Eve where it would have been his turn, leaving it to Gabe to fill in. “Why don't you want to?” “Cuz it's for babies!” “What?” “Well, it is in the name.” Kevin chuckled. Jamie nodded. “But if you don't want to do it since it's for babies, why me?” “Cuz you...

Clara and His Nutcracker

“Wanna go another round?” Logan asked. “You're awesome as Ozai!” “Absolutely!” Jayce said, grinning. “I could play Capricorn all night long!” Logan got the game started, but Jayce could not focus on the loading screen of Lucia winking and blowing a bubble with her gum. Something was bothering him. Logan had always said friends could never, ever sleep over at his house and Jayce could not understand why. His parents seemed normal. They let them have pizza for dinner. Even Logan's little sister Kaylee wasn't that obnoxious as far as little sisters went. His little brother had to be at least ten times worse. “Shoot, this lobby's not active.” Logan leaned forward to reset and Jayce looked at the boy in his Capricorn onesie, a few dark blonde curls slipping out of the dark blue hood, his plump, pink lips tightened in focus… “I'm ready for my bedtime story!” Kaylee yelled through the closed door. Jayce watched as Logan's face paled. He turned to look at Jayce, wor...

Tommy the Monster

Image
“How about this?” Janet asked, pulling out a fuzzy white rabbit costume. “I know you like Bunnydale!” “No way!” Tommy said. How had this happened? Eric and Jake had left him in Janet’s care and no matter how many costumes she held up, he knew he would never find a Halloween costume in the Three and Under aisle. Janet gave his hand a squeeze. “I know you were a cutie pumpkin last year, but maybe you could do it again this year!” “No way.” Tommy snarled. “Oh, right. You're a big boy now. Your brother told me you're almost totally potty trained!” Janet beamed as if that was a great accomplishment for a boy in ninth grade. “Are you still dry?” “Yes!” Tommy jumped away from her before she tried to check, trying to redirect both the conversation and the costume search. “I think there's more costumes over here.” He turned the corner, desperate to change the conversation. “Oh!” He nearly walked into a wall of pink frills and sparkles. “Those are girl costumes, silly.” Janet ...

A High School Party

Image
"Did you get it?" Max asked. He was so excited, Dan thought, that he actually looked away from his computer. He grinned and nodded. "Course I did. Party's tonight, isn't it?" "Can I see it?" "Calm down. Had to pull a lot of strings to even get them to agree to let you come to the party. Don't go ruining it by acting like some dorky little kid." "I'm not some little kid!" "But you are a dork? Interesting." He laughed. "Just kidding bro. You're not a little kid, so then start acting like it, dude. It's all juniors and seniors. You're the only ninth grader who was invited, so don't blow this." "Can I see the costume?" "It's pretty sophisticated. I'm gonna have to help you put it on, but trust me. It's boss." "Really?" He grinned from ear to ear. "But I really think you shouldn't see it until you've got it on." He frowned. That s...
