Caitlyn 2: Grandma's Gift

Image
"James," Caitlyn whispered. "This isn't funny. You have to figure out a way to change me back." "Can't." James replied. "Threw the magic wand in the lake." "I can't stay..." The former boy couldn't bring herself to say the g word. Not yet. "Like this." "You gonna have to." James said with a grin. "You'll get used to it, I bet." Bryan whispered. Caitlyn sighed. Why had she sat between the two of them? "Being a girl, I mean." "Duh." Caitlyn muttered. Get used to it? Bryan wasn’t the one stuck there in a pink dress, long hair getting everywhere. "I bet the spell will make it so even we don't remember you being Michael." Bryan shrugged. "What are you three whispering about back there?" Their dad asked. "Oh, leave them be, Mike." Lisa said. "They were fighting all morning. I'm glad they'll at least behave for grandma." &q

Carried Away

"Catherine! Fancy seeing you here! I feel like it's been a month!"  "Hello Marcie! Almost a month, yeah." She said with a chuckle. "I've been busy."  "Isn't that the truth? And you came without Aiden?" A strange look crossed Catherine's face and Marcie followed her gaze to the girl standing by a chair. It took her a moment, but then she recognized the girl's chin. "Oh. Oh, my god."  "Yeah." Catherine stretched the word out.  "What happened?"  "I... got carried away." Catherine said sheepishly. "You remember the garden party a month ago? The one where Aiden kept pulling girls' hair and got all muddy?"  "Of course." "Well, I took him straight home and gave him a bath. It was when I was brushing his hair for bed that it came to me. If he liked pulling girls' hair, maybe I should show him what having long hair is like."  "I see that.&quo

"Give it to me!" Lisa sighed as she set her lemonade down on the counter. Why did it always seem like she could only get a minute's peace and quiet before the kids started yelling again? "Give it, James!" Yep, it sounded like Caitlyn was being bossy again. The screen door closing behind her was normally enough of a warning for her kids that mom was coming. Today, however, Caitlyn kept trying to tug a stick -- a stick of all things! -- out of her brother's hand. She surveyed the scene as she drew closer. Bryan and James in their matching outfits -- sure, they were eleven months apart, but that was practically twins -- plaid shirts and stylishly torn jeans. And then there was Caitlyn in her pink dress and a big bow in her hair. Lisa almost stumbled. That darn lump! She tripped over it every day! She looked back at her kids and, for the briefest moment, something felt amiss "James!" Caitlyn yelled. The way she was trying with all her might to get tha

The Newest Ballerina

Dalton paced back and forth outside of the dance studio, waiting for his little sister to come out so he could escort her home. He thought it was so dumb that he had to do it just because his mom was working a little late. She was only a year younger than him, so why did he have to escort her home? He turned as he heard the door open, but it was just one of Emily’s friends. Courtney or something? He could not remember. “Hey, Dalton, Emily wanted me to come tell you that she’s running a little late, so she figured you could come inside and sit down to wait for her.” Dalton sighed. “Fine.” He walked past Courtney or whatever her name was and into the dance studio. He saw a few girls in yellow tutus standing around, but none of them were his sister. “Where is she?” He asked. “Changing.” Courtney replied. “I can take her there if you want.” Before he could even answer, she had grabbed his wrist and was pulling him along. “They won’t mind a boy being back there, I’m sure.” He tried t
